Fifteen of the students fell ill after eating their meals at Nissitissit Middle School in Pepperell on Thursday, Oct. 27, Superintendent Brad Morgan said in a release.
School staff immediately alerted the cafeteria vendor — Fresh Picks — and a new lunch was prepared for the students, some of whom were sent to the nurse's office with stomach illness.
Then, two more students were sickened this past Thursday, Nov. 3, also from eating undercooked chicken nuggets, Morgan said.
Members of the North Middlesex School District will meet with Fresh Picks to ensure this doesn't happen again. Morgan said the district has partnered with Fresh Picks since 2020 and they have never had any prior food safety issues before.
“The North Middlesex School District takes the nutrition and quality of school lunch very seriously, and will work with Fresh Picks to ensure the quality and safety of food is up to the standards expected by the North Middlesex Regional School District," he concluded.
